Community Action Agency Programs
Agencies provide Asset Development as part of their efforts to promote and strengthen family economic security. Financial independence for the individuals and families in our communities improves their standard of living and them heightened opportunity to contribute to the economy.
Asset Development specifically refers to financial counseling, Individual Development Accounts, and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).
CAFCA’s Automated Benefits Calculator, known as ABC, is a computer-based questionnaire that screens for potential eligibility for many of the state and federal human service programs available to people who live in Connecticut.
By answering just a few questions you can see if you may be able to get help with groceries, school lunches, doctor bills, medication, heating costs, or even money for day-to-day expenses. Based on the information a user provides, ABC will help you start the benefit enrollment process.

Community Action offers high quality, effective, early childhood education for all young children. Structured learning at this point in their development process enhances their physical, cognitive, and social development, and subsequent success in school and later life.

Community Action Agencies offer numerous health services, including counseling for individuals and families, access to health care and prescription medication programs such as ConnPACE, HIV/AIDS prevention and counseling, and substance abuse and prevention.
CAFCA’s member agencies also connect community members with health insurance and subsidized health care programs such as Charter Oak, HUSKY, Medicaid, and the Medicare Savings Program.
Homelessness prevention such as rapid re-housing is an essential component as the Community Action integrated service delivery approach. Agencies offer emergency rental and mortgage payment services, eviction prevention and mediation, and emergency shelter.
Members of the community can visit their local agency and find a variety of nutrition programs, food pantries, and access to the Woman, Infants, & Children program (WIC). People can also receive assistance filling out their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) applications and receive help determining potential eligibility.
Agencies offer a variety of programs that benefit seniors. These include access to health care, Meals on Wheels, and other nutrition programs, as well as general senior support services.
