Stamford Holds Dialogue on Poverty

CTE's Phil McKain
CTE held a Dialogue on Poverty titled The Face of Poverty in the Midst of Plenty at the University of Connecticut Stamford Campus on Saturday, April 29, 2000. The forum was part of the national series Dialogue on Poverty 2000: Leading America to Community Action led by the National Association of Community Action Agencies (NACAA).
Nearly
100 people from many different walks of life attended the forum.
Members of the business community, advocacy groups, provider agencies, elected
office, as well as concerned citizens, gathered to talk about about policies and actions that would increase
self-sufficiency for low-income Stamford residents.
Administration, faculty, and
students from the University of
Connecticut took part in the event, too, as well as participants in the I Have a
Dream Foundation Program, and staff of CTE.
"This
session allows us to kick the ball and get it rolling," said a newly employed graduate of CTE’s computer training program.
Panelists addressed a variety of issues linked to poverty in Southwestern Connecticut. CTE President and CEO Phil McKain spoke about Workforce Development; Christopher Bruhl of SACIA addressed the Digital Divide; Rev. Richard Schuster of St. Luke's Life Works talked about Housing; and Shelley Geballe of Connecticut Voices for Children discussed Child Poverty.
In addition, a 10 minute video titled Faces of Poverty in the Midst of Plenty was produced for the event by award winning filmmaker K. Wise Whitehead of New York City.
Following the presentations, participants broke into small groups to talk about strategies for easing the burden of poverty in the Stamford area.
