Messages

·        Welfare makes a difference in alleviating poverty when it is made available in a supportive and adequate manner.

·        When welfare policy aims to punish people, and deny people access to programs, the result is a deepening of poverty and a continuation of suffering.

·        “Well-Fare”: Investing in People to End Poverty  (This is the working name for our booklet)

“Welfare Made A Difference” Campaign

Speaker Outline

Thank you for participating in this event.  We appreciate you sharing your story, so we can get the message out that we NEED a safety net to provide opportunities for families, allow them a route out of poverty and provide a stable wage floor, which benefits the economic security of us all!

·        Please speak for only (specify time) minutes.  We have a lot of speakers who would like to share their stories too!

·        Stick close to the outline, adding only personal elements that illustrate the point of the event:

·        Welfare programs should be investing in families to enable them to lift themselves out of poverty permanently.

·        Current welfare “reforms: make our successes impossible for today’s families.

·        We would not be where we are today under the current welfare policies.

Talking Points

 For past welfare recipients

 ·        Hi my name is…

 ·        I am glad welfare programs were there for my family because it allowed us to…

·        Under current policies (time limits, workfare requirements, etc.) we wouldn’t have been able to

·        Closing thought
